Kent’s Local Drilling Experts
KF Drilling is based in Sittingbourne, in the heart of Kent, and has been providing geotechnical and environmental site investigation services across the county for over 30 years. As a local company, we offer rapid mobilisation times, competitive rates, and an in-depth understanding of Kent's varied geology.
From coastal developments in Thanet and the Medway Towns to rural sites in the Weald and major projects along the M20 corridor, our team has extensive experience working across Kent's diverse landscapes and ground conditions. We work with developers, consultants, engineers, architects, and local authorities throughout the county.
Whether your project involves a single exploratory borehole for a residential extension or a comprehensive ground investigation for a large-scale development, KF Drilling delivers accurate, reliable data with a professional, safety-focused approach.
Our Services Across Kent
Cable Percussion Drilling
Our modular cable percussion rigs are ideal for Kent's diverse ground conditions, from the chalk of the North Downs to the Weald Clay of the Low Weald. We drill to depths appropriate for the geology and project requirements, with full SPT testing and sampling capabilities.
Environmental Investigations
Kent has a significant number of brownfield and former industrial sites, particularly around the Thames Gateway, Medway, and along the North Kent coast. We carry out contaminated land investigations with soil and groundwater sampling to support planning applications and remediation strategies.
Residential & Commercial Projects
From individual house plots requiring foundation design data to large-scale housing developments and commercial schemes, we provide ground investigation services tailored to the scale and budget of each project across Kent.
Soakaway & Permeability Testing
Kent's chalk geology makes soakaway design a frequent requirement for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS). We carry out soakaway testing and permeability assessments in accordance with BRE 365 to support drainage design and planning conditions.
Kent’s Ground Conditions
Kent's geology is remarkably varied, reflecting its position at the edge of the London Basin and the Weald. The principal formations encountered during site investigations across the county include:
- Chalk — the dominant bedrock across North Kent and the North Downs, ranging from weathered and frost-shattered near the surface to intact rock at depth. Chalk presents specific challenges including solution features and variable strength
- Thanet Sand — found beneath the chalk in parts of East Kent, a dense, fine-grained sand formation that provides good bearing capacity but can present groundwater challenges
- Lambeth Group — encountered across North and West Kent, comprising variable clays, sands, and gravels that can change rapidly over short distances
- London Clay — present across North Kent, a stiff, fissured clay formation that is generally well-suited to foundation design
- Weald Clay — the dominant formation across the Low Weald in South and West Kent, a stiff clay that can be subject to shrink-swell behaviour
- Alluvium — soft deposits found along the Medway, Stour, and Darent river valleys and the North Kent marshes, often requiring specialist foundation solutions
- Head deposits and River Terrace Gravels — widespread superficial deposits that can vary significantly in composition and engineering properties
Our long experience working across Kent means we understand how these formations behave during drilling and can advise clients and consultants on the most appropriate investigation strategy for their site.
